Afghan Families are Arriving in Connecticut
Norfield Church, in support of its long time Outreach partner CIRI (Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants), has initiated the CIRI/Norfield Refugee Resettlement Drive.
Friends, Afghan families are beginning to arrive in Connecticut! CIRI just welcomed its first family, parents with two children, who arrived with only their passports and the clothes on their backs. And the flow of refugees from other countries also continues.
The Drive is now at the stage promised at its outset – asking 100 of you to donate $100 each to meet CIRI’s critical needs. The 100-for-100 campaign is central to our effort, providing all of you a way to help fund school uniforms for refugee schoolchildren, food for newly arriving families, kitchen items and other supplies for Norfield’s refugee apartment set-up team and many other priority needs.
There are two easy ways to make your contribution:
- By check to Norfield Church noting ‘CIRI Refugee Drive’ on the memo line’, OR;
- On the Norfield website Giving page, scroll to ‘Refugee Resettlement Drive’ and click ‘Donate,’ then select ‘Refugee Resettlement Drive’ under Designated Gifts.
No matter how you contribute, all of your contributions directly support CIRI’s Refugee Services.
Three weeks ago, CIRI greeted an Afghan family of four. Two weeks ago, a Syrian family of five arrived in Connecticut, having spent 8 years in Turkey after fleeing persecution in their home country. This past week, the apartment setup team prepared a Bridgeport apartment for two Afghan men. Next week, Afghan families of 7 and 4 are expected to arrive. CIRI has indicated there will be 5 apartment setups per week within a couple of weeks.
CIRI can meet the challenges it faces in the immense job of resettling almost 300 refugees this year. With your help. Please respond to the call of 100-for-100.
We hope that all of you will open your hearts and contribute your time, your talent and your treasure to help Norfield respond to the needs of these newest Americans. No matter who they are, or where they are on their life’s journey, we all will want these refugees to be able to count on Norfield’s support.

Direct Solicitation Fundraising
An email blast was sent asking all of the congregation to give generously to support CIRI’s critical needs – The 100-for-100 Campaign seeks $100 contributions from 100 of you.
Norfielder Jay Watson has set up a GoFundMe page that will facilitate grass-roots fundraising for the Drive. Please send this link to your family, to your friends and colleagues, and post it on Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms. The link is on Norfield’s website and in Friday’s newsletter. https://gofund.me/96fb9442
Amazon Registry for Kitchen Items
The Sue’s Hands team is responsible for ensuring that each new CIRI refugee apartment has a list of kitchen items, ranging from pots and pans to towels and detergent. Please socialize Karen Bennewitz’s Registry weblink among your family and friends who are interested in supporting CIRI’s resettlement effort. It’s also listed on Norfield’s website and in Friday’s newsletter.
There’s a lot going on at with the Refugee Resettlement Drive. Were it not for Norfield Church – which is, after all, you the congregation – none of this activity would be taking place. It’s pretty amazing to see! THANK YOU!! More updates will follow periodically. For questions, please contact Bayard Dodge at: firstname.lastname@example.org or #203-984-5680.
