Norfield Mobilizes for Afghan Refugees

Sunday, September 19 @ 11:15 am - 11:45 am

Refugee families from Afghanistan coming to Connecticut

Dear Friends,

Within days, Afghan refugee families will be arriving in Connecticut to begin their lives anew after fleeing civil unrest and persecution in their home country. Norfield Church is well-placed to support the resettlement effort, to bring comfort and assistance to these unfortunate displaced, most of whom will arrive with little but the clothes on their backs. Norfield has a decade-long partnership with the CT Institute for Refugees & Immigrants (CIRI), an agency that expects to resettle more than 100 Afghans in the next year (www.cirict.org).

Rev. Bernard and Moderator Mary Crawford have asked me to lead the effort to mobilize Norfield’s response within the framework of the Board of Outreach. I have volunteered at CIRI for more than five years in many capacities and have been a member of the Board for two. CIRI needs help, and Norfield and the wider Weston community can respond.

Our assistance will, I hope, take a number of forms, including fundraising, apartment setup and others. Fundraising is CIRI’s immediate critical priority. We will soon be launching the CIRI/Norfield Refugee Resettlement Drive, utilizing numerous channels including direct solicitation, a GoFundMe page, aggressive social media outreach and others. Pastor Thomas will be engaging Norfield and Weston youth and hopes to mobilize the Fairfield County veterans community. I have spoken to the Kiwanis Club of Weston who are interested in hearing more about CIRI’s needs.

Informal Session to Learn More

I will hold an informational session this coming Sunday, September 19th, at 11:15am in the Parish Hall. I urge you to come and to bring your friends who are not part of the Norfield family. Norfield’s effort needs to engage the broader community.

I know that Norfielders will respond to this call to action with their immensely diverse time, talent and treasure. Thank you all.
